When toilets gurgle, tubs drain slowly, or wastewater backs up into the home, many New Hampshire homeowners assume there is a simple clog somewhere in the line. Sometimes that is true. However, during the warmer months, one of the most common causes is much more stubborn: tree roots.
Roots naturally search for water, nutrients, and oxygen. Your sewer line can provide all three. If there is a tiny crack, loose joint, or aging pipe connection, roots can find it. Once they get inside the line, they branch out, catch debris, and slowly turn a small opening into a serious blockage.
That is where sewer cleaning methods come in. Two of the most common options are mechanical snaking and hydro-jetting. Both can help, but they are not the same. More importantly, the right choice depends on the age and condition of the pipe.
Why Sewer Roots Get Worse in Summer
New Hampshire weather can swing quickly from wet spring conditions to hot, dry summer stretches. That change puts stress on lawns, shrubs, and trees. When the upper soil dries out, roots start searching deeper for steady moisture.
A buried sewer line can become a target because it carries warm wastewater year-round. Even a small leak or weakened joint can release enough moisture into the surrounding soil to attract fine feeder roots.

Once roots enter the pipe, they do not just sit there. They grow into a web-like mass that catches toilet paper, grease, food waste, and other debris. Over time, that buildup can cause:

- Water backing up in a basement drain
- Repeated clogs that come back after cleaning

What Hydro-Jetting Does
Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to clean the inside of the pipe. Instead of simply cutting a hole through the blockage, hydro-jetting can scour the pipe wall, flush out debris, remove grease, and cut roots more thoroughly.
When the pipe is in good condition, hydro-jetting can be a stronger long-term solution. It can restore more of the pipe’s original flow capacity and help delay root regrowth.
Hydro-jetting is especially useful when the line has:
- Heavy sludge buildup
- Grease accumulation
- Recurring root intrusion
- Repeated clogs after snaking
- A structurally sound pipe that can handle the pressure
However, hydro-jetting is not right for every sewer line.
Why a Camera Inspection Matters First
Before hydro-jetting, a sewer camera inspection is important. The camera helps identify the pipe material, locate roots, check for cracks, find offset joints, and spot collapsed or weakened areas.
This matters because many older New Hampshire homes have sewer lines made from materials that require caution. Older clay pipes can have separated joints. Cast iron can become corroded and thin over time. Some older homes may also have bituminized fiber pipe, often known as Orangeburg or Bermico-style pipe.
Those older fiber pipes can soften, deform, and lose strength over decades underground. High-pressure jetting can damage them further. In some cases, aggressive cleaning can turn a manageable blockage into a sewer line replacement project.
That is why the safest approach is diagnostic first, cleaning second.
Snaking vs. Hydro-Jetting: Which Is Better?
The answer depends on the goal and the condition of the pipe.

Snaking is often best when the priority is to restore flow quickly and gently. It can be a safer short-term option for fragile or older pipes. It is also useful in an emergency when the line needs to be opened right away.
Hydro-jetting is often better when the pipe is structurally sound and the goal is a deeper cleaning. It removes more buildup, clears more of the pipe wall, and can help reduce repeat blockages.
For many homes, the best answer starts with a camera inspection. Once the line is inspected, a technician can recommend the safest method.
What About Root Killer?
Clearing roots does not seal the crack or joint where they entered. That means roots can grow back unless the opening is repaired or the regrowth is controlled.
Some products are designed to help slow root regrowth after cleaning. Modern foaming root-control products are often preferred because the foam fills the pipe and coats the top and sides where roots commonly enter. This can be more effective than treatments that simply run along the bottom of the pipe.
Timing also matters. Root-control treatment is usually most effective shortly after the roots are cut, while the fresh root ends are still exposed.
Homeowners should avoid dumping harsh chemicals into drains without professional guidance, especially in a state like New Hampshire where groundwater, lakes, rivers, and septic systems need protection.
When Cleaning Is Not Enough
If roots keep coming back, the real issue may be structural. A cracked pipe, separated joint, crushed section, or failing old sewer material will continue to invite roots in.

The right option depends on the pipe material, depth, location, collapse risk, and whether the line can be safely cleaned before repair.
Signs You Should Call Before It Becomes an Emergency

Do not wait for sewage to back up into the home. Call for help if you notice:

- A toilet that gurgles when another fixture drains
- Water backing up in a basement floor drain
- Sewer smells inside or outside the home
- Recurring clogs in the same line
- Wet, sunken, or unusually green areas in the yard
- Backups that happen during heavy water use
These signs can point to a main sewer line issue, especially if they affect more than one fixture.

Snaking and hydro-jetting both have a place. Snaking can restore flow quickly and may be safer for fragile older pipes. Hydro-jetting can provide a more complete cleaning when the sewer line is strong enough for it.
