Maintaining Your AC Unit’s Outdoor Compressor
Keeping your air conditioning unit is a great way to save time, money, and making sure that the unit’s lifespan lasts a while. Here at Al Terry Plumbing & Heating, we provide efficiency tune ups and maintenance with our services, in addition to unit installations. However, some people want to take it upon themselves to ensure the air conditioning unit is running smoothly. Here are some tips on how to upkeep the exterior compressor of an air conditioning unit.
- Clean Debris – After turning off the power, safety first, take a screwdriver and take off the top cover. If there are any leaves or other debris inside make sure you remove these from the inside of the compressor. Not doing anything can hurt the compressors performance as the leaves can block filtration.
- Surrounding Area Cleaning – During the spring and summer months, make sure you clean the area the compressor is in. Making sure the area is clean in all directions allows proper air flow to the unit. During the winter months, make sure you cover the top of the unit so nothing gets inside.
- Level Out – If your outside unit is not on a platform to keep it level, make sure that the ground it is on is level. Every so often you want to level your unit so there are no uneven areas. Being off level can cause the compressor unit to fail early in its lifespan, which will result in money lost.
- Clean The Fins – In addition to clearing debris, it is also important clean the fins both inside and outside. Leaf particles, dust, dirt, and other outdoor debris can get caught in the fins. Ignoring this cleaning can cause the fins to be block, thus hindering performance of the unit. Use a hose or a fin cleaner product, that you can get at a hardware store, to clean out our fins. We suggest not to use a high pressure washer as it can damage the fins.
These are simple do it yourself methods you can take on yourself to keep your unit running smoothly. Following these basic steps seasonally can really help in prolonging the life of your air conditioning unit.
